as a soon-to-be college graduate, i'm starting to understand why ppl feel the need to earn a lot of money. as i'm hearing ppl talk about how their future jobs will be paying $ 65000+, i cannot help but compare the meager amount i would be earning at my cancer research position. i guess it's hard to ignore the weight of $$ when sucess in this capitalist world is clearly measured by how much $$ you bring home.

we need to keep reminding ourselves of what is really important.

i think it's so ironic that so much resource in this country is dedicated to curing cancer and obesity related cardiovascular diseases (i.e. heart attacks) when the rest of the world doens't live long enough to have cancer or is too malnutritioned to die from obesity related diseases. very ironic.

one thing i like about brandeis: it's still satiated the hippy culture. the students who go here today are kids of the hippies who went to brandeis in the 60's and 70's, and brandeis was apparently a hot spot of social activism in the 70's. i think if i didn't come here, i probably wouldn't have cared so much about peace, poverty and global warming.

Health Ed

i'm writing a research paper on HPV, so i decided to share w/ ya'll a little summary i composed.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus. Certain straints of the virus can cause cervical cancer for women. cancer = death.

- most women (15-49) who are sexually active will get the infection at some time in their lives.

- having multiple partners will increase your chance of contracting it.

- condom cannot prevent it b/c it's transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, not by exchange of bodily fluid, although using condom can certainly reduce the risk.

- most people, especially men, do not show symtoms. just b/c his genital area looks normal, doens't mean he won't pass the virus to you.

solutions: 1) take the iniative to prevent its transmission. 2) get your pap smear. the sooner it's discovered, the sooner you can treat it, and the more likely you will continue to live.

that's all from me.

one of the most powerful films i've ever watched. highly recommended. it's a documentary of children of sex workers in the red light district in india. these kids practically had no future because of poverty and discrimination against prostitution. the film made me realize how cruel the world could be, and how privileged most of us are. there are a number of websites dedicated to the program that aims to improve the lives of these kids. it's amazing how much the film-makers have done personally to save these kids from unthinkable devastations.
